Wellness Council of Central Iowa
Our Mission is to lead Iowa employers to enhanced organizational health. The Wellness Council seeks to accomplish its mission by educating employers to create healthy work environments; assisting employers with development and improvement of their health promotion programs; and recognizing employers for achievement of excellence in health promotion at the workplace. Because of the amount of time spent at work, the worksite can provide a stable, supportive, health-conscious environment while simultaneously providing education and encouraging personal responsibility for health. Quality health education programs coupled with a positive corporate culture have the capacity to impact people, companies, and communities. Wellness Councils of America (WELCOA)

Ergonomic training lowers injury reports Employees who use proper ergonomic products and are trained in their use report an average 40% decline in musculoskeletal problems within 8 months. The study conducted by a Cornell University professor and New Jersey health and safety researchers was published in the Proceedings of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. The authors surveyed 356 technology office workers at four locations. Each workstation was fitted with a negative-slope keyboard with an upper mouse tray, and workers were given an ergonomic chair. Each received training that involved instruction on strategies to prevent injury, on proper posture, and proper use of the keyboard and chair. Eight months later, the researchers found that almost half of the workers had fewer back and elbow problems; 45% reported fewer problems with eyes, upper arms, shoulders, and feet; 40% had fewer problems with forearms, hands, and neck. Why YOU should join the Wellness Council of Central Iowa Today, more than 81% of American businesses with 50 or more employees have some form of health promotion program--the most popular being exercise, smoking cessation classes, back care programs, and stress management. Most employers offer wellness programs simply because they think the benefit is worth the cost. Yet business leaders continue to ask themselves how to control huge annual increases in health insurance premiums and healthcare costs. Worksite health promotion stands out as the long-term answer for keeping employees well. Although we spend more dollars on health care than any other industrialized nation, our citizens are not the world's healthiest. Our nation's population is largely
sedentary.
Obesity is reaching monumental
proportions.
Despite overwhelming evidence,
tobacco use continues to be popular.
The World Health Organization
describes stress as a "World Wide Epidemic."
High risk alcohol consumption
silently takes its toll on American's health.
Chronic health conditions continue
to plague the American population.
